Senior Mechanical Engineer
Above is looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team in Stockholm. This is a permanent full-time position where you will take a leading role in our engineering team, drive complex projects end-to-end, and help shape the next generation of products for some of the world's most exciting brands.
About the role
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Above, you will lead the mechanical workstream across multidisciplinary projects — from concept validation and technical feasibility studies to detailed design, prototyping, and production implementation. You will own the mechanical direction within your projects, take responsibility for identifying and solving complex technical challenges towards the client, and act as a trusted technical advisor to client stakeholders, industrial designers, strategists, and technology specialists.
You will mentor and coach more junior engineers, raise the quality bar through reviews and feedback, and increasingly contribute across skills — collaborating with electronics, firmware, software, and program management to deliver holistic solutions. As you grow into the role, you will start to define direction for cross-skill outcomes, drive scoping and planning, and help evolve how we work at Above.
Our business spans high-volume consumer products, smart home solutions, furniture systems, robotics, future mobility, progressive medical products, sustainable packaging, and new technology applications. We create value throughout all stages of development; from proof-of-concept prototypes to production-ready designs and comprehensive technical documentation.
What we are looking for
We are looking for a senior engineer with a strong technical foundation, proven delivery experience, and the maturity to lead work and people. We believe you possess many of the following qualities:
Education & Experience:
Master's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field, with at least 6–10 years of relevant professional experience in product development or consulting, including hands-on experience taking products from concept all the way through to mass production.
Technical mastery:
Deep understanding of mechanics, materials science, manufacturing processes, tolerance analysis, and design for manufacturing and assembly (DFM/DFA). You bring a well-developed engineering judgement to ambiguous problems.
CAD & technical expertise:
Mastery of industry-standard CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred; Fusion 360, Catia, Creo, or NX also valuable), including advanced assembly design, complex parametric modelling, PDM workflows, and high-quality technical documentation.
Surface modelling:
Documented experience of surface modelling and Class-A surface modelling, with a strong sense for balancing aesthetics, ergonomics, and technical requirements together with industrial designers.
Prototyping & validation:
Strong hands-on experience with rapid prototyping (3D printing, CNC machining, manual model building) and a structured approach to iterating, testing, and validating design solutions — including planning verification activities and interpreting results.
Manufacturing knowledge:
Solid experience designing for production methods such as injection molding, sheet metal, machining, casting, and various assembly processes. You know what it takes to industrialise a product and can anticipate issues before they reach the factory floor.
Overseas supplier collaboration:
Proven experience working with manufacturers and suppliers in Asia and/or Europe. You can lead technical reviews remotely and on-site, navigate cultural differences, and drive quality assurance in international partnerships.
Problem solving:
Ability to independently break down complex, multi-disciplinary technical challenges, perform calculations and simulations, and lead the team to validated solutions through prototyping and testing.
Leadership & mentoring:
Experience guiding and coaching junior and intermediate engineers. You give and receive constructive feedback, support your team's growth, and are comfortable taking ownership of quality across the mechanical workstream.
Project leadership:
Ability to plan, scope, and lead the mechanical part of a project — balancing evolving client needs with scope, budget, and timeline. Comfortable taking on cross-disciplinary planning together with project managers and other skill leads.
Client & stakeholder management:
Strong stakeholder management skills. You can present complex technical content with clarity to both engineers and non-technical decision makers, and you are credible as a trusted technical advisor to client stakeholders, including senior management.
Consulting mindset:
Ability to think strategically about customer needs, challenge briefs constructively, and represent Above/Eidra professionally in client engagements and new business conversations.
Continuous learning:
Curiosity about emerging technologies, manufacturing innovations, sustainability, and industry best practices — and a habit of bringing those insights back into the team.
Meritorious:
Experience with simulation software (FEA, CFD) and using simulation to drive design decisions
Knowledge of electronics integration, mechatronics, and working closely with EE/FW disciplines
Track record of leading technical workstreams across multiple projects in parallel
Experience contributing to commercial activities — scoping proposals, supporting sales, or growing existing accounts
Experience defining or improving engineering processes, standards, or tooling at a team or company level
Know-how around AI and how it is applicable to mechanical engineering and product development workflows
